Cloud modernisation, AI and network APIs dominate the telco transformation agenda. But turning technological innovation into commercial value depends on a capability that often receives far less attention: charging. In his latest article for Mobile Europe, Christian Schöntag, Chief Transformation Officer at Tallence, explains why modern charging and a controlled approach to CCS migration are becoming critical to successful telco transformation.
From platform replacement to controlled migration
Charging connects network capabilities and customer usage with commercial value. As operators introduce more dynamic services and business models, the ability to monetise these capabilities reliably and at scale becomes an essential part of transformation.
This also changes how Converged Charging Systems should be approached. A CCS migration is not simply a platform replacement. It involves moving live commercial logic, customer balances and complex operational dependencies into a future-ready charging environment – without disrupting revenue, customers or ongoing operations.
Christian argues that operators should therefore manage CCS transformation as a controlled migration factory rather than a one-off migration project. Structured migration waves, automated validation, reconciliation and clear governance make it possible to break complexity into manageable units and build confidence step by step.
Crucially, validation, reconciliation and end-to-end testing need to be designed into the migration approach from day one. In a recent engagement with a Tier-1 European operator, this structured migration factory approach reduced project duration by around 40% compared with a conventional migration approach.
