As the telecom industry prepares for Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, the spotlight is on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of telco services. In this interview, Nicole Schröder, Head of Field Marketing at Tallence AG, speaks with Pelle Ewald, Head of EMEA at MATRIXX Software, and Alexander Clausius, Head of Digital Products at Tallence AG. Together, they explore how the partnership between MATRIXX and Tallence is helping telcos overcome legacy infrastructure hurdles, drive innovation, and unlock the full potential of 5G and beyond. From real-time monetization to agile system integration, discover how their solutions are paving the way for a more agile and profitable digital future.
Nicole Schröder:
As we approach Mobile World Congress 2025, what are the biggest challenges that telcos face?
Pelle Ewald:
It’s been a challenging situation for the industry for some time, one major challenge for telcos is the complex legacy infrastructure they’re working with together with often too complex legacy BSS and OSS layers, which makes adapting to new revenue models and customer demands difficult and costly. They need to rapidly innovate without disrupting existing services, especially as consumer expectations around real-time services and personalized experiences grow, and by the way, B2B… Another pressing challenge is the push towards end-to-end automation across all customer touchpoints. To truly unlock the value of new services and 5G, CSPs must adopt more flexible, scalable solutions, and at the same time simplify their architectures, to allow them to quickly roll out new services, scale operations, and meet the changing needs of consumers, enterprises, and industries. The market is demanding faster innovation cycles, and telcos must address how they integrate data, orchestrate complex networks, and deliver a seamless experience.
Nicole Schröder:
Pelle, how does the partnership between MATRIXX Software and Tallence AG help telcos address these challenges?
Pelle Ewald:
Our combined solution offers CSPs the ability to quickly adapt and monetize new services, helping them navigate through these complex challenges. MATRIXX Software provides a converged charging platform that enables telcos to implement flexible business models, whether for B2C, B2B, or IoT. We ensure they can manage 5G and beyond seamlessly while delivering real-time charging and monetization.
Alexander Clausius:
We as Tallence support telcos with a robust adaptation layer that integrates new services into existing IT and billing environments. This allows them to modernize their infrastructure without disrupting existing workflows. With our solution, CSPs can seamlessly transform their operational and billing systems while ensuring a smooth migration from legacy models to more agile, future-proof architectures. Our approach reduces time-to-market for new offerings, which is critical in an increasingly competitive market.
A great case study of that approach at work is a major Tier 1 telco in Europe who faced the challenge of migrating their legacy charging platform to the MATRIXX converged charging solution. By automating standard tasks, that adaptation layer reduced their migration risk and project duration costs by an average of 40%.
Nicole Schröder:
The TM Forum has also mentioned the importance of agility in the telco space. How does our common solution enhance this agility?
Pelle Ewald:
Agility is at the core of what we do. With MATRIXX, CSPs can take advantage of flexible, API-driven frameworks that allow them to deploy and scale new services rapidly. Our solution supports dynamic pricing, real-time monetization, and rapid adjustment to market demands without the need for heavy customizations. This allows telcos to stay competitive and continuously innovate while minimizing operational complexity.
Alexander Clausius:
Our adaptation layer acts as a bridge, enabling telcos to quickly implement and test new business models. It simplifies the integration of modern systems and processes with older technologies, ensuring that they’re able to adapt without starting from scratch. This increased speed to market for new services ensures that CSPs can meet customer demands and stay ahead of competitors.
Nicole Schröder:
As we head toward Mobile World Congress 2025, what can we expect from MATRIXX Software in terms of new developments or announcements?
Pelle Ewald:
We’ll continue to enhance our platform’s capabilities to support next-gen services and fuel commercial innovation. Expect to see more integration with emerging technologies like AI and machine learning to help telcos optimize their networks and customer experiences. At MWC, we’ll showcase innovations around real-time monetization and Dynamic Billing that will allow CSPs to more effectively manage the entire customer lifecycle.
Alexander Clausius:
We’re excited about the future of digital telco transformation and will be sharing updates on our solutions that further bridge the gap between legacy systems and next-gen services. At MWC, we aim to highlight how our combined approach with MATRIXX will make CSPs more agile, profitable, and ready for the challenges of the future, including AI-powered customer service automation and dynamic service pricing.
Nicole Schröder:
Finally, what do you see as the key takeaway for telcos attending MWC 2025?
Pelle Ewald:
Telcos must move beyond traditional models and embrace digital-first, real-time monetization strategies across all their lines of business to stay competitive. The ability to innovate quickly, manage 5G and other next-gen networks, and deliver personalized services will define the winners in the telco space.
Alexander Clausius:
The message is clear: agility is key. Telcos that leverage flexible, scalable, and automated solutions will be the ones who thrive in this fast-evolving market. Our solutions empower CSPs to take control of their future and unlock new revenue streams, all while maintaining the operational efficiency needed to compete in the digital economy.
