The future of Cloud: Trends for 2025

Our recommendations for maximizing the potential of the cloud in 2025.

Cloud technologies have conquered the world and form the basis for many services in the private and professional environment, such as Spotify or Teams. The momentum remains high: new technologies, increasing requirements and a changing economic environment are driving cloud technologies and innovation with the cloud.

Gartner forecasts global spending on public cloud services of over 700 million dollars by 2025. This means that the global market will grow by more than 20%.

But in which areas will growth be greatest and which technology trends should companies not miss out on in 2025? I dare to take a look into the future.

1. AI-supported services are changing daily work

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already a driver of innovation these days. In 2025, AI models will be even more integrated into cloud services - from automated data analysis and process optimization to generative AI for the creation of content or software.

Companies can benefit from easily integrated, personalized and more efficient cloud experiences. For example, AI-supported workflows can increase productivity and automated cloud management can reduce operational complexity. This may require rethinking existing ways of working.

My recommendation:

Companies should not reject AI approaches and services, but instead motivate employees to open up to the changes in order to benefit from them. It is important to create a framework that allows experimentation and experience in a context that is safe for the company and supports the responsible use of AI.

2. Multi-cloud is being used more

Reality shows that more and more customers are using several cloud providers in parallel. This does not necessarily mean hyperscalers such as AWS, Microsoft and Google. The increased use of SaaS offerings means that diversity is increasing by itself. Multi-cloud offers companies flexibility and resilience, but poses challenges in terms of integration and administration. Innovative multi-cloud management platforms become essential when using multiple hyperscalers, nationally or internationally, in order to keep an eye on performance, security and costs. Data synchronization across different cloud providers will become increasingly relevant for new services such as the use of AI.

My recommendation:

Companies should analyze their existing cloud solutions at an early stage, adapt their IT strategy and focus in particular on the integration and management of cloud solutions. It is advisable to invest in a multi-cloud strategy at an early stage in order to avoid provider dependencies and increase your own ability to innovate.

3. Sustainability and the green cloud

The requirements for sustainable IT are growing. Cloud providers are increasingly focusing on renewable energies, more efficient data centers and CO₂-neutral strategies. Sustainability is not only becoming a competitive advantage, but also a prerequisite for regulatory compliance.

Hyperscalers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure are investing heavily in energy-efficient technologies - a trend that companies should take into account when selecting their cloud partners.

For some years now, hyperscalers have been providing detailed reports that give companies a precise insight into the power consumption of their cloud usage. These ESG reports help to create transparency and, if necessary, achieve results faster and better.

My recommendation:

AI, new business models and innovations are increasing electricity demand. Companies should review and improve the efficiency of existing architectures and code. For example, a migration with a lift & shift was and is often implemented as a move to the cloud without any adjustments. There is a lot of potential in this area, which can make companies more sustainable.

4. Edge computing complements cloud solutions

For 2025 and beyond, edge computing will be even more closely interlinked with the cloud. Whether in operational IT (OT) on the assembly line or in autonomous vehicles, the need for real-time processing means that local computing capacities will play a crucial role. Edge computing enables data processing closer to the source with cloud technologies, while the cloud takes over central analysis and storage. This results in faster response times for data-intensive applications and lower costs due to less data traffic to the central cloud.

5. Next-level security: Zero Trust and NIS-2

Security is and remains a key issue, especially in the face of growing threats from cyber attacks. Hyperscalers provide comprehensive concepts and solutions for this, but they need to be used and understood effectively. Zero-trust architectures, which verify every interaction, are becoming the basis of modern cloud security strategies.

At the same time, the entry into force of the NIS 2 Implementation Act places a new task on companies in the EU. This includes a comprehensive risk assessment and the management of vulnerabilities. I assume that the implementation of these requirements will massively increase security awareness in many companies.

My recommendation:

Companies should carry out a risk assessment and then review their security strategies and adapt them to reality. With zero trust architectures and effective identity and access management, companies can significantly increase security.

6. Sector-specific cloud solutions are booming

Cloud solutions are increasingly being tailored to the specific requirements of individual industries. Whether regulated markets such as healthcare or highly specialized industries such as manufacturing - tailored cloud services offer competitive advantages through targeted optimizations.

My recommendation:

The boundaries between IT and OT (operational technology) are becoming increasingly blurred. Companies should take a holistic view of IT and OT when moving to the cloud. This can increase security in OT and also enable new solutions.

7. Cloud-native technologies dominate

Agile development, DevOps, DevSecOps - the development of applications is shifting further in the direction of “cloud-native”. Containers, microservices and serverless architectures make software more flexible, scalable and resilient. Companies that rely on these technologies benefit from faster release cycles and better adaptability to market changes.

My recommendation:

Companies should embrace new methods of development. But don't just do it, seek targeted support. At the same time, it makes sense to review their own applications in terms of their benefits for the company and, where appropriate, to modernize them and make them cloud-capable. This allows the possibilities of cloud technologies to be used more effectively.

Take action now!

The cloud will continue to grow in importance in 2025 and become even more central to a company's success. The versatility and performance of the cloud is increasing and offers companies the opportunity to use this for their own development. Ultimately, companies will have to find their own way by working through the issues alone or with partners in a structured manner and anchoring them in a strategy for themselves. The complexity of the topics means that it is difficult to draw clear boundaries. It is therefore all the more important to work cross-functionally on the topics of the future. Those who pick up on trends at an early stage will gain a decisive advantage.
